THE MEMBER OF RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, PROFESSOR VLADIMIR VYACHESLAVOVICH BOLDYREV

Vladimir Vyacheslavovich Boldyrev has started his scientific carrier after graduation from Tomsk State University in 1948 as a Ph. D student of the same university. In 1951 he has obtained his Ph.D in Chemistry (“Candidate of Sciences”) for the thesis “Kinetics of thermal decomposition of oxalates”. In the time period between 1951 and 1963 he took several positions going up in the university hierarchy, starting from an assistant of the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry of Tomsk State University and ending with the head of the Chair of Radiation Chemistry of Tomsk Technical University. In 1962  he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Sciences (Chemistry)  for the thesis “Effect of defects on thermal decomposition of solids”. In 1963 he has received a full professor degree; 1963–1975  became the head of the Laboratory of Kinetics of Solid-State Reactions of the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion Siberian Branch of the USSR; 1976 – 1997 – Director of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Minerals Processing (original name, re-organized and re-named into the Institute of Solid-State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry) Siberian Branch of the USSR); 1998 – present time – Advisor of the Russian Academy of Sciences; 1964–1982  – professor of the Chair of Physical Chemistry of the Novosibirsk State University; 1983 – 2005 – Head of the Chair of Solid State Chemistry of the Novosibirsk State University (sharing this position with a position at the Russian Academy of Sciences); 2000 – present time – Director of the Research and Education Centre “Molecular Design and Ecologically Safe Technologies” (REC-008) of the Novosibirsk State University (BRHE program). Positions at the University have been shared with the positions at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

1978–1988 – Editor of the journal «Proceedings of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences USSR, Series Chemistry»; a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals “Reactivity of Solids” (1985 – 1990), “Annales de Chimie” (1972 – 2000), “Inorganic Materials” (1990 – 2000), “Russian Chemical Reviews” (1991-1997), Journal of Scientific and Applied Photography and Cinematography (1982 – 1986), “Reviews in Solid State Sciences” (1989-1993), Journal of Materials Synthesis and Processing (1993-1996), an Elsevier monograph series “Molecular Solid State Sciences” (1991-2000) “Materials Science Foundation (Encyclopedia for the New Millenium)” (1999); at the present time – a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, Journal of Structural Chemistry, the Chair of the Library Council  of the SB RAS.

In 1979 was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences USSR; 1980–1996 – the chair of the qualification council for awarding Ph. D. Degrees at the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences USSR (since 1991 – Russian Academy of Sciences); 1982–1986 – the chair of the Scientific Council on Solid State Chemistry of SB Academy Sciences USSR; 1984–1992 – vice-president of the International Advisory Committee on the Reactivity of Solids; 1987–1991 – a member of the Advisory Committee of the IUPAC on Inorganic Chemistry; 1985 – 1995 – a member of the International Committee of Thermal Analysis; 1988-1997  – president of the International Mechanochemical Association affiliated by IUPAC; 1991  – elected as a Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences; 1992–1996  – president of the International Advisory Committee on the Reactivity of Solids; 1993 – awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation for Achievements in Science and Technology for a series of his works on mechanochemistry; 1994 – 2002 – a member of the Bureau of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Materials of RAS; 1996  – the chair of the qualification committee for awarding Ph. D. and Dr. Sci. degrees at the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry Russian Academy of Sciences; 2000 – a member of the National Committee of Russian Chemists; a member of the American Chemical Society; a member of the Society of Powder Technology of Japan (1990); Soros professor (1994), Emeritus Soros professor (1997), Mendeleev Lecturer (2002), Honored  worker of the high professional education of Russian Federation (2002), Emeritus worker of the High School of Russian Federation (2004). Was awarded the following State Orders: “Badge of Honor” (1981), “The Red Banner of Labour” (1987), “For the Services to the Country” (1994), “Order of Honour” (2013); an honorable sign “For the Services to Novosibirsk District” (2006).  Golden medals of the Exhibition of the Achievements of National Industry of the USSR (1985, 1986), a Golden Kurnakov medal of Russian Academy of Sciences (2005), Semenov medal of the Academy of Engineering (2010), a commemorative medal in honour of the 100 anniversary from the date of a birth of academician A.A.Trofimuk (2011), a commemorative medal “For the contribution to progress of Novosibirsk region” (2012), a Golden medal of the European Scientific-Industrial Chamber for outstanding achievements in the field of chemistry and materials science (2012).

Boldyrev has published 15 monographs, 956 papers, several thousand conference abstracts. During the last five years from 2005 to 2010 Vladimir Vyacheslavovich Boldyrev has published 4 monographs, 3 chapters in the collective monographs, 42 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 34 abstracts of presentations at National and International Conferences. He has received 65 Russian and 7 foreign (USA, Japan, France, Sweden, Germany) patents, and four patent claims have been recently approved. Is a co-author of a Discovery № 108 “Radiation-thermal activation of solid-state reactions in inorganic systems”, priority from 24.05.1973, certificate issued in 1999. 318 documents are deposited in the Elsevier SCOPUS Database, since 1996 they have been referred to 1855 times total, including 429 citations in 2008-2010, Hirsh index is equal to 24, the most highly cited paper has been referred to 120 times. Among the former students supervised by Vladimir Vyacheslavovich Boldyrev two became Corresponding Members of Russian Academy of Sciences, 18 – Doctors of sciences and full professors, 87 – have received Ph. D. Degrees. Boldyrev is the Head of a Leading Research School, supported by a grant from the President of Russian Federation for the state support of leading research schools НШ-279.2014.3.

General information: Boldyreva Elena Vladimirovna, Russian, born 04.02.1961 in Tomsk (USSR, now Russia). Graduated from Novosibirsk State University (Chemistry Department, Division of Physical Chemistry) in 1982. In 1988 received Ph.D in Physical Chemistry from the Institute of Solid State Chemistry (Novosibirsk). In 2000 received Doctor of Sciences in Solid State Chemistry from the same Institute. Employment: since 1980 – the Institute of Solid State Chemistry (Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk), and, simultaneously – Novosibirsk State University (Chemistry Department, Division of Solid State Chemistry). Since 2004 is the Head of the Department of Solid State Chemistry of Novosibirsk State University and a professor at the Research and Education Center on Molecular Design and Ecologically Safe Technologies. Since 2010 is a Chief Researcher of the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry SB RAS.

Research interests: Reactivity of solids, mechanochemistry, solid-state reactions with negative and positive feed-back, photo-mechanical effects, non-ambient crystallography and spectroscopy, in particular – the effect of pressure on the crystalline active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), polymorphism, crystallization, phase transitions, dissolution of molecular solids, problems related to mechanochemistry of drugs, the API-excipient interactions, metastable and amorphous states of molecular solids. Boldyreva is the author of over 50 and co-author of over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in the Monographs. A co-editor of the monograph “Reactivity of Molecular Solids” (Wiley, 1999) and of the monograph “High-Pressure Crystallography. From Novel Experimental Approaches to Applications in Cutting-Edge Technologies” (Springer, 2010); an author and a co-author of several monographs in Russian.

Research stays abroad: Boldyreva has spent many research terms abroad, including a Humboldt Fellowship with Prof. F. Hensel (Marburg University, Germany), a visiting professorship with Prof. J.-M. Lehn (University Louis-Pasteur, Strasbourg, France), a Royal Society Fellowship with Prof. J.A.K. Howard (Durham University, Great Britain), a CNR Fellowship with Prof. A. Gavezzotti and Prof. A. Sironi (Milan University, Italy) and many other. Since 2001 she cooperates on a regular long-term basis with the Swiss-Norwegian Beamlines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Grenoble, France), Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, France), Helmholtz-Zentrum für Materialien und Energie (former Hahn-Meitner-Institut) (Berlin, Germany), and Paul Scherrer Institut (Villigen, Switzerland). She has given invited lectures at about 30 Institutes and Universities in Europe, Japan, USA, and South Africa. Since 2000 she spends most time in Russia, but is still involved in international research and educational projects, coordinating some of them. In particular, she has running projects with University of Heiderabad, India, New York Iniversity Abu-Dhabi, UAE, Institute of Nanotechnologies, Karlsruhe, Germany), Institute of Pharmacy University of Ljubljana, Slovenia,  Institute of Pharmacy, University of Innsbruck, Austria, Edinburgh Centre of Extreme Conditions and School of Chemistry University of Edinburgh, UK.

Awards: Boldyreva has received many national and international awards, among which the most important one is the Award from the European Society for Applied Physical Chemistry for the year 2007 for profound studies of the structure and reactivity of organic and inorganic solids, with special emphasis on applications in pharmaceutical industry.

Membership in the Societies, Committees, Scientific Expertise: Since 1996 Boldyreva is a member of the International Advisory Committee on the Reactivity of Solids. She is a member of the European Crystallographic Association, of the German Crystallographic Society, a member of the International Mechanochemical Association, a member of the Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, American Nanosociety, a member of the COMPRES society (USA), a member of the American Chemical Society, of the Sigma Xi Research Society, of the International Centre for Diffraction Data (USA), of the Russian Advisory Committee on the Intermolecular Interactions and Molecular Conformations, National Committee of Russian Crystallographers, of the IUCr Commissions on High Pressure and on Teaching, and of a SIG “Intermolecular interactions and crystal chemistry” of ECA. She is a Board Member of the European Society of Applied Physical Chemistry, Eurostar-Science. In 2013 she was also elected to the Advisory Committee of the International Conferences on Chemistry of the Organic Solid State (ICCOSS). Since 2008 till 2014 she served as an elected officer of the Executive Committee of the IUCr. She is a co-editor and a member of editorial boards of many international research journals, including Zeitschrift für Kristallographie, High Pressure Research, Journal of Structural Chemistry, J. Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Acta Crystallographica Series B – Structural Sciences.

In 2012-2013 she was a member of the Presidential Council of Science and Education of Russia. Since 2013 till the present time she is a member of the Scientific Council of the Russian Ministry of Science and Education.
